Anytime of the year Paraty is an interesting place to visit. If you like animation, movement and lots of people then the high season, especially carnival, is your best choice but book early. The winter months (June to August) offer more calm, quiet and relaxation. The Brazilian holiday season starts the day after Christmas and ends with Carnival (usually in the end of February or the beginning of March). Most of the hotels have a package rate for the holidays like New Years, Easter as well as the local holidays and if you are visiting during these times they will not usually break the package so you must pay for the whole package even if you only stay some of the days in the package. The best time to visit both Paraty and the state of Rio, at least as far as the climate goes, is between May and August, when the region is cooled by trade winds and the temperature remains at around 22-32°C (70-90° F). Between December and March during the rainy season the humidity is high and the temperature reaches 40°C (104° F). You should never underestimate the sun: drink plenty of liquid and don't try for a quick tan in the midday heat. Paraty can be reached by plane, car or bus. There is regular bus service from both Rio de Janeiro
(250km) and São Paulo (330km) and
this is the most economical. Having a van or taxi from Paraty pick you up at your hotel or at the airport, in either Rio or Sâo Paulo, and bring you directly to your destination here is a safe and sure way to arrive without any
worries. All of the central area of the town as well as the beaches of Pontal and Jabaquara are within easy walking distance. The supermarkets, stores, pharmacies and the bus station are all just a few blocks from the historic center. In Paraty you can find bike, buggy and motorcycle rentals at various agencies. The other points of interest, waterfalls, beaches, trails and distilleries can all be reached using the local bus line or daily van tours are also available. Due to the tropical climate and informal atmosphere the attire is very casual. Sport shirts, shorts, sundresses and sandals are the norm here. Tennis shoes or a comfortable pair of walking shoes are also useful to visit the waterfalls, trails and other areas including the cobblestone streets of the historic center. Paraty offers a wide variety of options in accommodations to suit all budgets. Check our lodging page and also have a look at the houses for rent to find something that fits your style and budget. The town of Paraty offers one of the best examples of colonial style in South America. The houses and churches are worth visiting. The numerous galleries offer many different styles and techniques for you to choose from. A boat trip, be it power or sail, is a must with dozens of beaches and islands to explore. There are many beautiful trails and waterfalls to see in the hills surrounding the town. At night there are numerous excellent restaurants, some offering local dishes others exotic cuisine. Live music can also be found in a number of places for your
enjoyment. |
