Paraty was founded, grew, prospered, and survived because of boats. Throughout its history, and even today, boats are central to the livelihood of the town.
The native fishermen of Mamanguá (an area only accessible by boat), under the guidance of the Brazilian environmental protection agency, harvest selected woods and hand craft replicas of the traditional fishing canoes, boats and schooners that are still in use in the bay.
